Being a paid on-call fire fighter at Winkler Fire Department is rewarding work. We seek individuals who are committed to working in a professional manner as a member of the team, dedicated to providing outstanding service to the City of Winkler and the RM of Stanley.
Recruiting is initiated when vacancies become available. On-file applications are reviewed and individuals are contacted first to confirm their interest to begin the recruiting process. Advertisements may be placed with local media outlets to find additional candidates.
Recruits must complete the following stages to become a paid on-call firefighter:
Stage 1: Screening steps
be at least 18 years of age and completed the fire department application form (link found below)
fire department physical fitness evaluation
fire department aptitude test - note: applicants that have already completed Stage 2 previously to applying are not required to take the aptitude test
complete and submit self assessment (self assessment will be provided)
interview with the recruiting team
reference checks
have a valid class 5 driver’s license and be capable of obtaining a class 4 drivers license with air endorsement (must provide a driver’s license abstract which is obtained from MPI)
submit and Criminal Record Check & Vulnerable Sector Inquiry (all checks will be reviewed)
recruiting team will review Stage 1 results and recommend successful candidates for Stage
Stage 2: General Firefighter Training
successfully complete first aid & CPR course (training provided) – 16hrs
successfully complete Fire Fighter Level I Firefighter which includes Hazardous Materials Operations, and Incident Command System 100 (training provided) - 264 hrs
Note: Applicants that are successful Stage 1 candidates, and have already completed Stage 2 will move directly to Stage 3
Stage 3: WFD specific training & orientation
Winkler Fire Department Operations Orientation Training – 16hrs
Note: Recruits that successfully complete stage 3 will be placed on the roster, be given a pager and be able to respond to calls
Stage 4: Initial driver training
Class 4 driver’s license - MPI
A recruit must successfully complete all 4 stages to be paid as an on-call firefighter
We encourage interested individuals to apply by completing an application form and dropping it off in-person at the Fire Station at 290 Pembina Ave. between the hours of 9 am and 1 pm on weekdays. Application forms are available here or at the Fire Station.
